Poem:Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow: You are not wrong who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand-- How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep--while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream? |
Explication:A Dream within a Dream by Edger Allen Poe is a poem that kind of questions the difference between reality, and fiction.
Throughout the poem Poe uses descriptive verbs and words that help paint a picture. This makes the reader themselves question the difference between reality, and fiction. He starts this question of wonder with lines 6-11, “Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. These lines make us as readers start to see not only the direction of the poem it’s self, but also the tone, and plot. This poem has an understandably sad tone, which isn’t hard to spot. From the opening sentence to the closing line, the poems tone is heartfelt. From the way speaker demands a kiss to the way he cries out to God you can feel the emotion. This has become one of my favorite poems because of the use of words. Even though this poem may be considered classic Edger Allen Poe for its dark and deep undertone, it still shows a different side of everything. Not only does it make you question and wonder, but it also makes you believe and picture. |
