Poem:Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow. |
Explication:Dreams by Langston Hughes is a poem where the imagery has a very important place in the writing.
As you read this poem, you imagination starts to take over, and you can not only sense, but you can also see the words written. The lines “Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” are a great example of imagery because you can picture this broken-winged bird unable to fly. This amazing use of imagery also makes you start to think about what life would be without dreams, and I think that is what Langston wanted. The use of metaphors also plays a great role in the imagery because you start to think about life actually becoming a broken-winged bird or a barren field. Both stanzas in the poem share the same opening of “Hold fast to dreams” which is a very important and inspiring thing to think about. This poem also has a positive tone, and message. I feel like it is telling us to hold on to our dreams, and keep dreaming. If you don’t they might die, making life harder, and not as enjoyable. This could be a very inspiring message to other because Langston is kind of telling and encouraging dreamers, and their dreams. I love this poem for its optimistic and encouraging words. Even though this poem is slightly shorter than others, it packs a lot of power. It shows a kind of teaches us that not meeting, or not trying to meet your dreams really isn’t a good way to live life. |
