Poem:Dreams are the subtle Dower
That make us rich an Hour -- Then fling us poor Out of the purple Door Into the Precinct raw Possessed before -- |
Explication:Dreams are the subtle Dower by Emily Dickerson is a very start and to the point poem.
From the start it takes a wide left turn that if you aren’t strapped in for, you’ll be left behind. The lines “That make us rich an Hour -- Then fling us poor” are very strong to me because of the deepness to them. They have a great and powerful meaning that is almost something that you need a microscope to spot and a quick wit to understand. The meaning of this poem might be interrupted as dreams are a small gift that could make you or break you at any moment. I believe this is true because some creative individuals use their dreams to create interesting things such as art, music, poetry etc. Creating these pieces and works can make you wealthy and give you great fame, but at any given time it can all end. This poem has a realistic look on life told by a realist that really knows the ends and outs of life. It has a tone that can also be considered realistic, but yet a bet pessimistic because of the word choices. The use of words in this poem is very great because it gives this very simple, yet deep message what it needs to be just that. The wording helps tell the story, and sell the theme, and set the tone all in one. I love how short and to the point this poem is. It also has an underlined theme, and message that you may not catch after one reading. It kind of tells us that dreaming is okay to do and it’s also okay to act on them but, you shouldn’t get to caught up in them or trying to make them come true. I feel like this poem is trying to teach the difference between dreaming and being realistic, and the importance of knowing the difference between the two. For that I feel like Emily Dickerson should get a round of applause because I don’t believe that many people know the difference or might have even though about the effects of dreaming too much. |
